What is dry needling?

Dry needling is used to reduce pain and muscle tension while improving mobility and overall function. Contrary to popular belief, dry needling is not acupuncture. While the two therapies share some similarities, dry needling is based on western medical and research approaches. It is not acupuncture because it does not adhere to the same principles and beliefs.

To stimulate the tissue, your practitioner will use sterile acupuncture needles. Dry needling treatments involve using a “dry” needle, which is injected into the affected area without introducing any substance into the body.

This treatment creates an environment that promotes the body’s ability to heal while reducing pain and improving movement. This treatment is thought to change how the brain and muscles communicate, allowing the system to return to a more normal movement pattern.

How will I benefit from dry needling?

Our team at Health Shift can help you find relief with our tried-and-true physical therapy treatments. We’ve discovered that combining traditional exercise-based treatments with dry needling helps most of our patients achieve the pain-free results they’re looking for.

This technique has been shown to effectively reduce or eliminate pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions such as:

  • TMJ pain (aka jaw pain)
  • Back and neck pain
  • Overuse injuries
  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms
  • Arthritic knee pain and other joint pains
  • Fibromyalgia, trigger points, and more

Our physical therapists employ a whole-body approach to thoroughly examine your condition and determine if this is the best course of therapy for your unique needs!

Is it painful?

Dry needling may sound painful because of the name, but most people report little to no discomfort during and after in-office procedures. Our highly trained physical therapists will make the procedure as painless as possible.

A very small percentage of patients may experience an unpleasant cramping sensation as the needle is inserted , where a shortened, hypersensitive muscle will ‘grasp’ the needle. This reaction is similar to a brief muscle cramp and should subside shortly after treatment. In very rare cases, some soreness may persist for up to 24-48 hours after treatment. If it persists, you can treat it at home with ice or heat and plenty of fluids.
